Stress field analysis and its effect on selection of optimal well trajectory in directional drilling (case study: southwest of Iran)

Abstract Given the complexities of reservoir exploration and development, it is vital to understand geomechanical properties well in drilling operation. In constructing a mechanical model earth, combination environmental parameters, as magnitude direction stresses, used. this study, stress analysis its effect on azimuth deviated an oil field located southwestern Iran are investigated. Necessary parameters estimated using density slowness logs sonic waves (shear compression). The Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion followed determine safe mud weight window. A earth designed laboratory data logging, validated by results obtained from rock mechanics calibrated core samples. show that at about 135° with angle 15° most stable path for carbonate formation studied field.
